Walking through bush is part of the Australian experience and continues to connect us to the land and its history. The sense of escape created by being in the midst of trees is more and more essential in contemporary life. This drawing combines the ubiquitous Australian phenomenon of bushwalking with another – the casuarina trees of the eastern Australia. It recalls the sense of being away from the world surrounded by the life of the trees and merging our own shadows with those of the trees to become unified elements in the bushland. The variation in markmaking using three kinds of pastel media reflects the way light in the bush plays tricks with our vision and perception of distance.
