Painted entirely plein air, ‘Landmarks 1’ has an indelible connection to the land on which it was created, blending subconscious mark-making with a contemplative response to painting in an open Australian landscape. Working on the ground, the picture evolves intuitively, directed by the environment. Layers of marks are applied, left to settle, then washed away to reveal traces of the process. Immersed in all the visual cues around me – the gestural verticals and converging horizontals of the surrounding bushland paddocks – the image becomes an abstract glimpse of the place.
