My painting is a studio work derived from my experience of the Northern Midlands of Tasmania – Specifically the Norfolk Plains of Brickendon Estate This is an agricultural area colonised by the British in the early 1800s previously occupied by indigenous people then removed during the Black War of the 1820s The land is now ordered by European settlement however the looming mountains surrounding this landscape and the vast often brooding sky sitting above it speak of history and immense amounts of time embedded in the land Having lived in Tasmania all of my life I am a keen observer of the seasonal skies and light – I paint the now colonial landscape with a sensitivity for the past.
