Each Frond a Sister (Mooney M Creek)

During the cooler months, the gullies and ravines of the Great North Walk come alive with bracken fern that cascade down the slopes towards the nearby creeks. Below the ground’s surface, each of these delicate ferns are connected by root systems that pass water and nutrients to the bracken back up the hill. In many ways, they act like a family, or a symbol for humanity as a whole – connected, integral, synergised. My work seeks to balance the portrayal of the individual with a vision of the unified mass. Vibrant green fronds are decorated and detailed, then drift out of the foreground into a sea of luminescence. Towering above are three tree ferns, overseeing endeavours like older siblings.
