“Sounds of Cicadas” is inspired by the often-overlooked landscapes of suburban Australia. These are the places we pass by every day—quiet corners and tangled greenery that rarely catch our attention, yet hold so much life and meaning. I’m drawn to painting these settings because they reflect the reality of how many of us live: in diverse, multicultural neighborhoods that shape the Australia we know today. These suburban scenes might not fit the stereotypical image of “Australian landscape,” but they feel deeply familiar. In these places, you find bushes, plants, and vines—large and small—growing wildly together. They climb, support, shadow, and sometimes overwhelm one another.
