The subject of ‘Passage’ is the high-country wilderness of the Snowy Mountains. I have a lifetime connection to the Snowy Mountains; multi day walks, back country camping, plein air painting trips.
Wilderness can be seen as a place that is only accessible by foot, where any person ‘is a visitor who does not remain’.
‘Passage’ is a description of a time and place. It also expresses the paradox at the heart of my painting practice; an expressive, bold, immediate and spontaneous mark-making within a process that has structure, discipline and a sense of stillness and contemplation. In my painting there is a continuous negotiation between chance and calculation, expression and description.
